Web Site Comments / Forums Slow/Crashing
« on: July 10, 2011, 05:52:33 pm »
For the past 2 days that I've been here, the forums have been very slow and constantly crash either when I try to read/preview or write a post. I see lots of timeout errors like this one:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in D:\Hosting\4595887\html\community\Sources\BoardIndex.php on line 25

I took me 3 or 4 times to get my last post to actually make it to the board.

Just thought I'd let you know if you weren't aware of it already.

The configuration is not viewable for the users protection as that would introduce a security hole and could allow a user to inadvertently break their configuration.

That's understandable then.

You can use multiple driver services (one per machine) to have the TTS driver speak from multiple computers.

So I could have one speaker "client" per machine?  Is there a way to control if the TTS output only goes to certain drivers?  I.E. - If I had 5 cheap computers, with one amp and set of speakers connected to each one, could I specify which machines I could send the TTS output to or does the output just go to ALL machines where a driver service is running?  If so, sounds possible for some flexibility at least.

It really does look nice and seems to have a lot of features for not being around that long.  Again, your interfaces to the data are great - perfect to allow custom front ends. Do you think the issue above would change in the near future?  As you can tell I'm trying to talk myself into it. :)

The configuration is stored in a proprietary encrypted format and is only accessible via Elve or the API's.

Disappointing that it's not even viewable, but not a deal breaker since it looks like you did provide various robust ways of accessing everything.

The Text To Speech driver uses the Microsoft Speech engine and is directed to whatever sound card is configured in the OS control panel.

So if I have 5 sound cards (one for each zone) there is no way to assign TTS to any other specific one of them? So TTS only goes to one zone?  That could be the dealbreaker. I'm looking at possibly moving away from Homeseer however their speaker client allows you to run clients on various machines or multiple instances on the same machine mapped to a different sound device so you can zone your TTS. I want my morning announcements spoken to the bedrooms, not out my front porch.

The native Elve media player supports 1 zone at this time. While Elve does support a variety of PC based media player solutions, I personally would recommend a hardware solutions such as Russound, Nuvo, Squeezebox, etc.

If it's a technical issue take a look at the BASS audio library for .NET.  In my mind this seems like a nice niche someone could fill.  A lot of HA enthusiasts have zoned audio setups and you always see lots of questions on how to set one up and control it easily, but they don't want to pay the thousands of dollars that they usually run.  Five cheap USB sound cards and 5 small amps would run just a few hundred dollars and achieve the same general result if it was driven by nice integrated control software like yours looks to be becoming.  It may not be audiophile quality, but it serves the purpose.  I think that would be a major selling point (that's what I'm looking for).

It's too bad that at least at this time you can't solve the issue presented in point #2.  That might be something to look at in a future release. The software looks like it has a lot going for it and I'm sure it is only going to get better.  Don't know if I can jump in the boat yet though because of that. Curious to see what's coming in your next release.

I had a few questions I wanted to ask before I attempt to set aside a machine for a trial run.  The software certainly looks like it was designed well and I like the web services/XML interface to it so I can build my own front end.

1) How is the data stored (i.e. is in in text files, Access, SQL, etc.).  I have a lot of my own data stored in mySQL and it would be nice if everything was integrated into one data store.

2) I couldn't find much about TTS.  Is it available and is it available to be directed to different zones (I have 5)?

3) Does your native Elve media player interface have the ability to do multiple zones? Supporting that without the need of another app like JRiver would be *such* a great selling point.
