Driver for Omnistat 2
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:36:11 am »
I have been looking around and had a few questions.  I see there is an Omnipro driver but i dont have a panel.  I do have 2 Omnistats and i have no way to comunicate with them directly with Elve.  There are drivers for other automation packages that i have looked at like MControl, Premise, CQC, Homeseer and i was hoping there was one for Elve.  I have liked the interface very well so far and want to move forward but will need this to work before being able to.

The next question is if its really worth persuing.  It seems like interest is dying for this product based on the age of most of the posts.  I also see the latest news from John being that he is taking a new project but that was in dec of 11.  Whats the status of this program and can anyone help me with the omnistat.  I am good with computers but not as good with programing.

Thanks

I too, like the interface.  Elve has been working very well and I do like how easy it for me to create custom drivers for things that I need.

I don't know if it's dying, but I doubt it's growing. If John could just get a final 2.0 version out that would help a lot I think.  There are a few of us that have created drivers could create one for the Omnistats.  But it's hard for me (and I'd guess others) to justify the time to do so.  A quick google of the Omnistats and it looks like they communicate over zigbee.  I don't have any zigbee devices or any experience with that protocol so it would be difficult for me to actually create something from scratch.

I really like the product as well. The interface is amazing compared to what is out there. I wouldn't say that interest is dying. Though not many people post, most posts have quite a few views. I think the issue is the community is not enthusiastic because we're not getting any updates. More users would interact and share if interacting and sharing had an effect on the product. Take CQC for example. There are lively discussions going on over there, and the developer is responsive in taking feedback and implementing changes. I don't know if development will ever resume or not. It is safe to say at this point that this project is not a priority to the developer(s). dtuell I would evaluate the product based on your needs and with the expectation that it is not going to be updated. As far as your Omni Stat issue it will be difficult to get someone to write a driver unless they also have a need for it. For me, I don't want to spend the time developing anything if the product is not moving forward.
I always wanted to be somebody. In retrospect, I think I should have been more specific.

I would add also that since my system is stable I'm not really needing assistance :)

I recently submitted to John a driver I made for my new OppoDigital BDP103 blu-ray player.
It should be included in future release.

(I do agree that new releases take waymore time these days)

I have an Omnistat 2 and an Elk, so while I am able to control the Omnistat with Elve (via the Elk), it is entirely unusable for me due to the fact that I use Celsius, and Elk pooched the Celsius implementation in their set up. Due the the conversion they use, I am unable to set all ranges of temperature, i.e. I can set 22 C, or 23.5 C but nothing in between. Of course the temperatures I like to keep this house are entirely in this range!

The Omnistat 2 (that I have anyways) communicates via serial. Unfortunately I do not have the knowledge required to write a driver. Here is the guide: kb.homeauto.com/redirfile.asp?id=482&SID=

PS: I don't think CQC has an Omnistat 2 driver, otherwise I would have jumped ship a long time ago. Premise or converting to Fahrenheit are my only easy-ish options.
